Monastrell (Mourvèdre) has never been as expressive at such an impressive price point. Bodegas Olivares has been farming this single vineyard organically since the 1930s. It is one of a small group of vineyards in the world that survived phylloxera, allowing for ungrafted old vines to deliver layered density in the glass. Sandy soils account for the wine’s lifted perfume. Following a native yeast fermentation, Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya Monastrell is aged for six months in French oak barrels. The producer’s location in northwest Jumilla at an altitude of 825 meters with very cool nights provides for freshness not seen in other parts of the region.
