Division Winemaking Company is an urban winery launched in 2010 in Portland, Oregon Kate Norris and Thomas Monroe. Their shared passion for wine led them to Beaujolais, France, where they honed their viticulture and enology skills while developing a deep appreciation for sustainable farming and minimalist winemaking. This experience formed the cornerstone of their philosophy at Division Winemaking Company, which they established upon returning to the United States.
Norris and Monroe are dedicated to low-impact, eco-friendly practices. They source their grapes from select vineyards across the Willamette Valley and other parts of Oregon and Washington, each chosen for their unique terroir and commitment to sustainability. Their approach to winemaking involves minimal intervention, with a preference for native yeast fermentations and aging in old French oak barrels. This method allows for the production of wines that are authentic expressions of their origin, highlighting the individual characteristics of each grape variety and the unique nuances of their specific terroir.
The range of wines produced at Division Winemaking Company is quite diverse, with offerings that span several labels: Division, Division-Villages, Gamine, and Nightshade. The Division label focuses on single-vineyard wines that exhibit the distinct qualities of their specific terroir. The Division-Villages label offers fresher, more approachable wines that are ready to drink upon release. Gamine, inspired by Norris’s love for the Rhône Valley, is a line that celebrates the elegance and femininity of Grenache. The Nightshade label is a recent addition, devoted to crafting vibrant, terroir-driven Cabernet Franc. Through these distinct labels, Norris and Monroe have successfully created a diverse portfolio that reflects their winemaking philosophy, their respect for the land, and their passion for showcasing the unique character of each vineyard site.
