This is the stunning red that started a wine revolution in Rioja with its philosophy: one vineyard, one cellar, one wine! Its opaque purple color exudes aromas and flavors of black plum, blackberry, cedar, mountain herbs, anise, and exotic spice, and its style marries modern fruit concentration with a traditional range of flavors to produce a wine that offers the best of both worlds. When this project started in 1991 there were no single vineyard wines in Rioja; producers blended from various regions and vineyards, but San Vicente bucked that trend and eschewed the traditional aging-based classification system in favor of a wine that simply stood on its merits and the brilliance of its single vineyard. This wine is made with a special clone of Tempranillo (Tempranillo Peludo) that is hand-picked from organically-farmed, high-density plantings of 45+ year-old vines within the legendary La Conoca vineyard. The wine is fermented by native yeast in large oak vats before spending 20 months in new French (90%) and American (10%) oak barrels.
