The 80-year-old estate vines are a mere one-hour drive from downtown Madrid, yet the environment becomes rugged, mountainous and cool in the gorgeous Vinos de Madrid DO. Created in 1990, wines from this newer DO produce a lighter than expected expression of Garnacha. One could read a book through Bernabeleva Navaherreros Tinto, it is so translucent in color. Aromas of wild strawberries and orange zest entice while a long 40+ days of maceration and year in neutral oak provide for tannic breadth. Zesty, floral and chewy on the palate, this wine shows an intriguing combination of delicate flavors and notable structure.
